Medieval Sokemen Living History Group present a series of Living History events at Longthorpe Tower

Presented by the Medieval Sokemen re-enactment group, the four events weave together as a journey through the 14th and 15th centuries, giving you the opportunity to explore the Tower’s rich history and experience life as it was lived many years ago.

3 & 4 August: Longthorpe Tower in the 15th Century: The Whittlebury family reside at Longthorpe Tower in 1471 during a time of turmoil – the Wars of the Roses is underway and the Yorkist King Edward IV is launching a bid to get his throne back from the Lancastrians. Which side will Robert Whittlebury choose?

14 September: The Tower by Candlelight: Experience Longthorpe Tower lit by the soft glow of candlelight and uncover the fascinating tales of this remarkable building through a guided tour led by costumed characters representing different eras in the Tower’s rich history.

2 & 3 November: A 15th Century Christmas: Delve into the past with our costumed history enthusiasts as they bring to life the traditions from a medieval Christmas. Discover how the festive season was celebrated 600 years ago, with yuletide feasts, medieval games and an opportunity to take part in a traditional Mummer’s play!

Women of Note led by Chloë Allison

Come Away In

Saturday 18 May – 11.00am to 11.50am at Storey’s Field Centre, Eddington

With their musical director, Chloë Allison, Women of Note offer songs to satisfy all tastes.  Traditional Irish melodies, plus a splash of Mendelssohn and 1930s jazz, through to the Beatles.  ‘We welcome you all’ to a Saturday brunchtime concert of songs and readings.

The set of unaccompanied songs includes Down by the Salley Gardens – based on the poem by William Butler Yeats, Hoagy Carmichael’s smooth and mellow Nearness of You, the Beatles’ evocative Long and Winding Road and, as the title of the performance suggests, Karine Polwart’s joyous Come Away In.

The concert is neatly timed to slot in between a relaxed breakfast and a leisurely Saturday lunch and will have no interval.

This year Women of Note is celebrating a 30th anniversary of singing together.

Seats are unreserved.  No door sales.  Tickets at £8 (under 16s free) are available from Women of Note members or via  https://womenofnotecambridge.weebly.com

There will be a charity collection for Cambridge Women’s Aid.

Saturday 27 April 2024 – SPRING HISTORY DAY

10.00 Waterstones, 22 Sidney Street, Cambridge, CB2 3HG

Dr Miranda Malins: Puritan Princess: Cromwell’s daughter

Miranda Malins is both a historian and a novelist, one half (alongside our guest in 2022-23, Paul Lay) of the unmissable 1666 and All That podcast.  Here she takes the often forgotten story of one of the women in Oliver Cromwell’s life, his daughter Fraces, and weaves a wonderful story around her to show what it was like to be a woman at the centre of power at Cromwell’s court.

Dr Jessica Sharkey: Tudor Encounters with the Wider World

Jessica Sharkey is an expert on the foreign policy of Tudor England, and its relationships and interplay with the other courts of Europe.  Here she looks at how Tudor England fitted into the rapidly-broadening European understanding of the wider world and how the Tudor monarchy stood in relation to its more powerful – but equally troubled – European neighbours.

Professor Peter Sarris: Justinian – Emperor, Soldier, Saint

Cambridge Professor Peter Sarris brings to life the man who had the Hagia Sophia built, codified the Law that’s seen even today, and sought to re-create the Roman Empire in full. Facing the first global pandemic as well as wars on two fronts, his efforts to purify Christianity brought the nastier aspects of that religion to the fore.  Called both a Holy Emperor and a Demon King, he’s worth finding out about.

£8.00 for all three speakers for non-members of the Historical Association, Free for members.  Waterstones will be publishing a booking page

Contact benet1@hotmail.co.uk for any questions.

Those who have a need for hearing aids are eligible to buy a disabled railcard. Unlike the senior railcard, you can use the Railcard at any time of the day and an adult companion travelling with you also gets 1/3 off their rail fare. It is also cheaper.

Requests for volunteers

New volunteering opportunity – Wimpole Ambassador

A new and exciting volunteering position has been created within the Welcome team to enable us to reach more of our supporters during the busy periods and be present at some of the most crucial areas of our estate.

The Wimpole Ambassador role is already being trialled by some of the Visitor Welcome volunteers and we have decided to open it up to the wider volunteering community. As an ambassador you will have a roving and mobile role around the Turning Circle, Gardens, Mansion, Garden Gate and first areas of the Parkland chatting to visitors, learning about their motivations, and assisting them with any queries they may have. You’ll also be discussing the importance of growing support for Wimpole and the National Trust as well as gathering vital feedback on our site.

You will be equipped with a bag containing a radio, info cards on the estate, maps, plasters, dog lead, copy of emergency procedures and daily brief. This role is excellent for those wanting to get out and about and who enjoy walking, chatting to visitors and being a crucial point of contact at busy times.

For further information and to register your interest, please visit our website or contact anne.french@nationaltrust.org.uk

The Rotary is a world wide service organisation helping communities around the world. Our motto is “Service Above Self”

Rotary in Cambridge has a long history of doing good work, however, to make sure this continues we are looking for new members.

Members of Rotary are ordinary people looking to have fun while working with others to find opportunities to help communities both local and further afield.

Membership is genuinely open to all either as an individual or a couple. Everyone is welcome.

To help our recruitment we are looking to establish a new Rotary club in Cambridge which meets in an informal setting and will look at ways it can have a positive impact in Cambridge and surrounding villages.

So if you are someone who is community minded and would like to meet other like minded people to explore how you can work together to help others then please contact us to find out more.

Please email club Chair Courtlin at cambridgecommunityrotaryclub@gmail.com

Cambridge City Council would like to know how accessible their services and events are to neurodiverse people, and what they could do better. The Expert On Myself (TEOM) are conducting research and training for City Council staff, and we’ve been interviewing a range of neurodiverse people – that is, people who are autistic, ADHD, Dyslexic, Dyspraxic, or any other kind of permanent information processing difference – who live in Cambridge or nearby. We are particularly looking for older people, who are probably not diagnosed with anything, but who recognise in themselves that they have differences, and perhaps have family members who have differences, in how they think and behave due to having an unusual kind of brain. If you think this is you, and you are willing to take part in a short, half-hour interview this week or next week, please get in touch: helloteom@theexpertonmyself.org.uk or call Lisette on 07757435751. Interviews could be held on Zoom, over the phone, or possibly in person.
