AGM with lecture

Later Life as Adventure: Changing the Narrative of Ageing

Professor Emeritus William L. Randall, Department of Gerontology, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, N.B., Canada

Synopsis: In this lecture, Emeritus Professor Bill Randall will draw on nearly 30 years of teaching gerontology to explore with us the possibility of later life as an adventure—counter-intuitive though the concept seems—in at least four inter-related directions: the adventure outward, the adventure inward, the adventure backward, and the adventure forward.

Bio: William (Bill) Randall, the Derek Brewer Visiting Fellow at Emmanuel College during Lent 2024, will pull from his research and writing on the topic of biographical (vs biological) ageing to propose a vision of ageing that steers a middle course between overly positive and overly negative portrayals of later life. Professor Emeritus of Gerontology at Saint Thomas University, New Brunswick, Canada, and a key figure in the field of narrative gerontology, Bill is author or co-author of several academic articles and books, including The Stories We Are, Reading Our Lives, Restorying Our Lives, The Narrative Complexity of Ordinary Life, and Fairy Tale Wisdom: Stories for the Second Half of Life.
