  • Description:

Although the UK and Germany are "full democracies", many procedures and functions in both governments are very different and we will start with a brief comparison. In this course we look at the role of the German Chancellors who have governed after World War II from 1949 (Konrad Adenauer) to the present day. The time span ranges from Germany's "Western integration" in the "Adenauer era" to the development of the EU, world and energy crises, and the war in Ukraine in 2021. What challenges did they face and what solutions they had to offer? We will mainly follow newspaper headlines to explore. This course does not include the complete German history, but focuses on events - chosen by the tutor - in the reign of the nine Chancellors have ruled in the Chancellery (Bonn, Berlin) since 1949.
