This is a continuation of the course successfully run by Stella Alderton for a number of years. In the first term we will continue last year's concentration on the short stories of Thomas Mann, one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, starting with two interesting early works: Der kleine Herr Friedemann and Tristan. While discussion of the stories will mostly be in English, the texts will be read in German, including aloud in class. New members, who will be very welcome, should therefore note that a degree of reading fluency in German will be required. After the first term, depending on what the the class decides, we will either continue working our way through Mann's oeuvre or alternatively turn elsewhere in German literature.
