Set in Victoria, Australia, in 1900, the film is about a group of female boarding students who vanish at Hanging Rock while on a Valentine’s Day picnic, and the effects the disappearances have on the school and local community. This parable of imperial anxiety and sexual hysteria is a classic of Australian new wave cinema, and in my view a haunting and rather special film.
