Is forestry an art or a science?

Speaker: Hilary Anderson (Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs, & Northants

Hilary Allison has worked in the forests, woodland and environment sector for all of her career. She worked for the Woodland Trust, the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity for 25 years, 15 of which as Director of Policy. She served as Chair of the Forestry Commission’s East Midlands Advisory Committee for six years before becoming a Forestry Commissioner from 2020-2026.  She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, a judge for the Royal Forestry Society’s Excellence in Forestry Awards and bought her own small woodland in Herefordshire in 2022 in an effort to walk the woodland talk.

Foresters rely on a blend of creativity, sound judgement and good science in order to design forests for an uncertain future. This talk will explore how forestry sits at the intersection of multiple scientific disciplines from climatology and plant epidemiology to genetics and ecology, and the evidence for why the protection and restoration of forests are crucial to human health and wellbeing.
