Unlike her other completed novels, Austen has confined her eponymous heroine to one location; Highbury and its immediate environs. This course will look at how Austen conveys an impression of frequent motion in Emma, without the need for significant journeys or great distances. Emma is 'fixed, so absolutely fixed' in one location, and yet the narrative is all about movement. A knowledge of the novel will make the course more enjoyable!
