Beautiful lines and curves (Spring term) (MTH 02)

  • Day and time: Thursday 11:45 - 12:45
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Spring (9 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 0
  • Start date: 21 January 2027
  • Description:

We will learn about curve plotting on squared paper (supplied). Bring pencils and ruler and (important) eraser! We are surrounded by lines which delineate shapes, rays of light .... and beautiful curves, circles, ellipses, parabolas and many others. Since antiquity we have known how to produce these shapes by construction using the simplest means - pegs, strings and so on. This will be our approach; if you wish to know the mathematical formulae for these shapes we can see them, but our activities will not involve mathematics. Newton and his contempories had the temerity to conjecture that gravity operates in the same ways everywhere in the universe and we will see how this determines the motion of balls, orbits of the heavenly bodies and the trajectory of Artemis 2!
