This course will trace the changing nature of evangelical Christianity in the English-speaking world, from its origins in the Reformation, via the Wesleys, the Victorian reformers, fundamentalism and Pentecostalism, to the reasons for its very different characteristics today in the USA and the UK. We will cover the nature of evangelical belief and practice, how these have been influenced by changes in culture, and the effects the movement has had on individuals and society. The focus will be on understanding the nature and dynamics of the movement, rather than evaluating its truth claims. There will be plenty of time for discussion. All are welcome, regardless of your beliefs and previous exposure, if any, to evangelicalism; the only requirement is a willingness to listen and learn.
