  • Length of course: 1 term. Spring (9 Weeks)

  • Start date: 12 January 2027
  • Description:

The course is intended to take students through an extended introduction to the history and science of clocks. It is aimed at an audience of interested lay persons who want to know more, rather than the expert. The focus will be on mechanical clocks, but will include mechanical watches, and passing commentary on other timekeepers. Aspects covered will include: a brief history of horology; what elements make up a clock or watch and how they work; evolution over time of clock and watch types and the decorative styles they exhibit; basics of clock technology; the great names involved in the development of horology over the centuries; horology and astronomy; and clockmaking in England from the 17th century to today. The course will include some basic maths and science used sparingly to explain how and why clocks work.
