Discovering lives in Georgian England through newspapers (HIS 10)

  • Day and time: Tuesday 12:30 - 13:30
    Fortnightly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Autumn (5 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 0
  • Start date: 13 October 2026
  • Description:

This course will provide glimpses into Georgian lives in the columns of provincial newspapers published after 1750. Many newspapers survive from the period and are now digitised. We will visit Bristol, Norwich, Manchester, Birmingham, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne and read the news. At each session I will tell you a little about the selected location and the newspaper proprietor. There will be plenty of sensationalism as the Georgians relished tales of crime and executions. Selected extracts from each newspaper will be supplied in advance which you will be expected to read and consider. Your conclusions and any research you have done will be discussed in class. I will make a nominal charge (£5) for supplying digitised copy at A3. If you have only sketchy knowledge of the period then some prior reading would be useful, available on request. This course may be unsuitable for anyone whose eyesight is poor.
