  • Day and time: Monday 11:45 - 12:45
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Autumn (4 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 9
  • Start date: 16 November 2026
  • Description:

An article in ‘Embroidery Magazine' in 2023 featured Lilian Dring's 'The Patchwork of the Century' (on permanent display in London's Southbank Centre) and concluded 'Some names are well known in textile history. Dring is one whom we need to know more'. Graduating from the Royal College of Art as a poster designer in 1929, Lilian Dring produced some provocative posters, including one described in the London Transport Museum's most recent book as 'the most frustrating LT poster that never was'. Emerging into the Depression, she turned her design to domestic embroidery items, such as cushions and hangings, and later to ecclesiastical vestments and embroidered portraits of houses. Throughout her career, her designs were remarkably innovative, and still seem fresh and modern. Slides and pieces from her own collection will illustrate the wide range of her work, reflecting the events of her time, and carrying still relevant social and environmental messages.
