  • Description:

The aim of this course is to analyse Anglo-Irish relations from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. Consideration will be given to the emergence of Irish nationalism during this period and the challenges it posed to the Union with England. Particular attention will be paid to Cromwell's Irish campaign in the 1650s, the growth of Dublin in the eighteenth century and the emergence of aggressive nationalism from the French Revolution to O Connell, the Fenians and Parnell. Central to all this will be an analysis of the Great Famine of the 1840s, the resultant loss of the Irish language and mass emigration in the years that followed. Historical videos, music and nationalist ballads will be included.
