  • Description:

We shall explore together fascinating accounts of the survival of death described in Gregory Shushan's book, 'Near-Death Experiences in Indigenous Religions' (Oxford University Press, 2023). Following Raymond Moody's and Elizabeth Kubler-Ross' ground-breaking investigations of these phenomena in the 1970s, we have learnt much from individuals who survived car crashes, heart attacks and falls from mountains, in the west, and their insistence that what they experienced on 'the other side' completely transformed their subsequent lives. But we have heard very little about comparable experiences of those of more remote cultures. Shushan's study investigates African, Native American and Oceanic religious and shamanic beliefs, and individuals' reports, of lands of the dead, souls' journeys, guardian spirits, and what have come to be termed 'Near-Death Experiences'. I shall discuss the ideas and accounts in Shushan's book (which you will need a copy of) and facilitate group discussion.
