  • Description:

It is a quarter of a century since Neil Astley's 'Staying Alive - real poems for unreal times' took modern poetry from the margins to the mainstream of popular arts. It is an unrivalled series which has expanded with additional titles spanning the 20th and 21st century of international English language poetry (skewed towards recent decades). This course works through the fourth collection in this series: 'Staying Human, new poems for Staying Alive' published by Bloodaxe (ISBN 978 1 78037 390 4) in 2020. This is the set text to be studied over ten 90 minute sessions. No prior knowledge of poetry is required. The class will discuss a handful of selected poems each fortnight sharing their thoughts and opinions. This is a discussion group with no formal teaching, led by enthusiasts who have no training in poetry but rely on the combined knowledge and wisdom of the group.
