In this short course we will read and analyse a selection of novels in which one of the family's servants, whether cook, housekeeper, maid, governess or butler plays a significant role. The first (and by far the longest) novel for our focus will be Margaret Forster's 'Lady's Maid', a re-imagining of the life of Wilson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's maid. Other titles will be: Anne Bronte's 'Agnes Grey', Daphne du Maurier's 'Rebecca', Josephine Tey's 'The Franchise Affair' and Kazuo Ishiguro's 'The Remains of The Day'. Lucy Lethbridge's 'Servants' is useful background reading.
