The Higgs Boson and Higgs Mechanism (Spring term) (SCE 23)

  • Day and time: Thursday 12:30 - 13:30
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Spring (8 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 0
  • Start date: 14 January 2027
  • Description:

The discovery of the Higgs Boson was driven from the concept that particle physics theory naturally required all particles to be massless. We'll discuss why this was the case, how the surprising properties of superconductivity suggested a way out, Peter Higgs ground-breaking work and its application to the electroweak theory and the long march culminating in the discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012. This series of talks will unpack in much more detail the short talk presented in May 2026.
