    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Autumn (9 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 0
  • Start date: 06 October 2026
  • Description:

Coats of Arms have been part of our national heritage for centuries. We will explore the science of Heraldry from its beginnings to the present day - learning the fascinating Norman-French terms used by the heralds of old to describe each knight's coat of arms and meeting the menagerie of fierce and mythical beasts that appear on them, giving an insight into some of the colourful historic characters whose arms they were. We will discuss the entitlement to bear or inherit arms and how to identify the coats of arms that we see on our travels. The wealth of heraldry in the churches and colleges of Cambridgeshire will be a fruitful hunting ground. Sessions will incorporate practical work on describing and drawing coats of arms and discussion of photographs of local heraldry sent in by members. Coloured pencils required!
