In her book, 'The Vivien Greene Dolls' House Collection', Margaret Towner writes: 'In her writings (Vivien Greene) ... always conveyed very clearly the message that the early (dolls') houses need to be seen not only as ...antique objects but also as microcosms of social history, preserving, sometimes untouched, aspects of domestic life that have been totally overlaid in real old houses by the changes inevitably introduced by centuries of human occupation.' This course will look at seven decades of British Social History (1890 - 1960) through period dolls' houses together with the furniture and accessories they contain. The course will chart changes in domestic life, considering the impact of political, economic and social events on the daily life of families in Britain.
