We shall explore the beautiful paintings on Greek vases in the Fitzwilliam Museum. (Really, they are drawings, as line is more important in them than colour). I shall analyze changes in style over the centuries -- the respective Geometrical, Archaic and Classical periods; their subject matter (i.e. both mythological and genre - that is, everyday - scenes); and the form and patterning of the lovely pictures depicted. I shall relate the images (and the differing vase shapes) to the society they were from, and the tumultuous history of Ancient Greece, the fount of Western culture.
