Theories of empire and their current implications (CUR 05)

  • Day and time: Tuesday 9:45 - 11:15
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (10 Weeks), Spring (10 Weeks), Summer (9 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 0
  • Start date: 06 October 2026
  • Description:

We will explore different theories of Empire, exploring questions such as What is an empire, what drives their development, how do they rise and fall, what are their impacts, and what makes them succeed or fail? We will look at selective examples and discuss current 'empires' such as the US, China, Russia, and the EU. We will discuss what history and theory suggest about how these empires might develop in the future. I use a mixture of lecture and discussion and short video clips. I will likely have to cancel some weeks due to (difficult to predict) personal and work commitments. However, we will have enough weeks over three terms to cover the topic. Sessions will be recorded for participants to review if they miss a session.
