Neglected women writers (LIT 34)

  • Day and time: 2nd Monday of the month 14:30 - 15:45
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (3 Weeks), Spring (3 Weeks), Summer (3 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 0
  • Start date: 12 October 2026
  • Description:

We will again read a novel a month by women writers from the mid-twentieth century, many of whom enjoyed broad, popular appeal in their day, but are now rather neglected. In a century during which the role of women changed radically, the fictional heroines of these novels highlight women's experiences of life inside and outside the home through the first half of the 20th century. This year the source for the books will be those published by Persephone Books. For the first session we will read the first ever book published by Persephone Books - William, an Englishman by Cicely Hamilton, first published in 1919. ISBN 9780953478002. We will decide on subsequent reads as a group, choosing from a limited number of books in the extensive Persephone books catalogue, which can be found at https://persephonebooks.co.uk/products/catalogue
