A taste of the Latin Classics (and some helpful grammar) (LAT 07)

  • Day and time: Monday 15:00 - 16:30
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (10 Weeks), Spring (10 Weeks), Summer (7 Weeks)
  • Vacancies: 7
  • Start date: 05 October 2026
  • Description:

We take it in turns to read and translate extracts from authors such as Virgil, Cicero, Horace, Ovid, Pliny and Seneca and we try also to include some earlier or later writers. We intend that class members will be able to participate according to their level of confidence and ability and we welcome new members, including those who have studied at a lower level with U3AC and are ready to move on. Where possible, we use online resources or copyright-free pdf documents with the texts, vocabulary, notes and translations so that class members are not put to great expense in purchasing books. Grammar is discussed where helpful in elucidating our Latin readings. Optionally, the final part of each class features English to Latin translation, with answer keys provided. 1-2 hours prep between sessions recommended.
