The computer is an essential tool for much modern living, but few people understand what they are and how they were developed. This course will give a very broad overview of the subject. Topics include: before the modern computer; computer basics and terminology ('jargon busting'); the different types of computers and what they are used for; how a modern computer works; how a computer is made; how they are programmed; and how they communicate (networks). We shall also be looking at some of the people and companies that have helped develop the industry and have a peek at what we can expect in the future. This course is lecture based, with the occasional video. Students need have no knowledge, experience, or access to, a computer. Please note that this course will NOT teach you how to use a computer!
