Pindar, one of the greatest Greek lyric poets, wrote his odes to celebrate athletic victories in ancient Games. He had a philosophical interest in these events and believed that the victorious athlete achieved success through being transformed and transfigured by the gods. Consequently, from Pindar's odes we learn much about ancient Greek religion and ethics. The aim of the class is to study several odes using the recent translation by Andrew Miller - Pindar 'The Odes', University of California Press, 2019, ISBN 9780520300002. This translation is required.
