Chair’s message

A beautiful sunny day – but it’s one step forward and several back on the Pandemic Management (a term I use loosely) front.  I am sure that many of you will be struggling with the implications for your family and social lives of the latest restrictions.

I spent some time at the weekend trying to establish whether our walking groups could continue with a maximum of 30 participants or had to scale back to a maximum of only 6. Thankfully, it appears from the guidance from the Ramblers’ Association and Sport England that our walks and cycle rides can be seen as ‘organised outdoor activity events’ and, as such, are exempt from the ‘rule of 6’.  Other measures to reduce the possibility of acquiring or transmitting the virus still apply of course.

In the Office, staff are taking some well-deserved time off (in rotation of course so the phone and emails will continue to be answered) before the busy first weeks of the U3AC year which starts shortly.

New items

Autumn term courses will be held by either Zoom, email or in the open air. There will be no courses running in the U3AC premises. The only courses which may meet in other venues are a small number of fitness courses. The course description in the Programme of Courses on the website gives full details. Please also check the start date of your courses there.

Beginner’s guide to using Zoom

For course participants we have produced a Users’ Guide (here) which we hope will be helpful.

Tutor Support Handbook (TSH)

A small team of Courses Committee members and Office staff has produced a ‘Tutor Support Handbook’ that is intended to be a resource to all of our tutors and indeed any members who might be thinking of starting to teach a course in the near future.

It is meant as a resource for you to dip into, not to read from cover to cover, though there is absolutely nothing to stop you from doing that!  The Tutor Support Handbook can be found here.

Other Organisations

U3AC is supporting other local organisations by listing their online activities on the Other Organisations page of our website https://www.u3ac.org.uk/social/other-organisations/
