Andrew Sankey: The history of the English Cottage Garden

Speaker: Andrew Sankey

Andrew Sankey – Garden designer, lecturer and author.

In this talk Andrew will aim to show that the pretty romantic Victorian cottage garden painted by watercolourists of the period is false, and that the ‘true’ cottage garden was the poor labourers’ cabbage patch with orchard, bean field and pig sty. The talk traces the development of the cottage garden to its present form that is loved and copied throughout the world.

Andrew is an ex-Teacher of technical drawing & graphic design, who changed profession and became a garden designer/landscaper and nurseryman. Creating a Lincolnshire cottage garden enabled research into its history, sayings and superstitions linked to the cottage garden, companion planting and uses of native plants.
