Epidemiology and epidemiologists are very much in the news. Many of the modelling approaches applied to Covid-19 are also being used to predict and manage diseases of crops and livestock, where losses, particularly in low and middle income countries, have devastating effects on food security. Starting with Covid-19, I shall briefly introduce the ideas that underlie epidemiological modelling and then explain how these ideas are used to support food security in Sub Saharan Africa and South Asia.
