The roles of animals in literature (LIT 27)

  • Day and time: Tuesday 14:15 - 15:15
    Fortnightly
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (5 Weeks), Spring (5 Weeks), Summer (5 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 10
  • Start date: 18 October 2022
  • Description:

Animals feature in literature for many reasons, to examine complex ideas in an approachable form, perhaps to depict different aspects of human nature, or to explore the world from a non-human perspective. Animals may play a small but significant role, as in Ian McEwan's Black Dogs, or a major one as in Flush, by Virginia Woolf. We expect to read both fiction and non-fiction. All members of the group will be involved in choosing the books to read.

  • Format: Discussion

  • Leader: Gillian Lang
  • My research has included the study of natural behaviour in animals, and there is some wonderful and varied literature featuring them.
