Who's hidden behind Virginia Woolf? (LIT 32)

  • Day and time: Friday 10:30 - 11:30
    Fortnightly
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (5 Weeks), Spring (5 Weeks), Summer (5 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 11
  • Start date: 21 October 2022
  • Description:

This fortnightly book group will read and discuss modernist women writers working from the First to the Second world wars - Brits in autumn, Americans in spring and the rest of the world in summer. Early twentieth century literary modernism was radical and experimental, wanting to break with the Victorian past in both form and content. It presented a possibly unprecedented opportunity for women, allowing them to “reach beyond masculine portrayals” (Maren Linett) and write about topics rarely, or never, covered before. We will read novels, poetry, plays, autobiography(ish), criticism and possibly folklore – I will send out the finalised lists to people who join the group. Access to a computer is useful as I’m planning to email you optional background reading, but it isn’t essential.
