Social impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) monthly discussion group (CUR 05(z))

  • Day and time: 1st Monday of the month 18:00 - 20:00
  • Length of course: 2 terms. Autumn (2 Weeks), Spring (2 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 12
  • Start date: 07 November 2022
  • Description:

Artificial Intelligence is developing rapidly and being rolled out in a wide range of applications such as facial recognition, personalised newsfeeds, product recommendations, medical diagnosis, and driverless vehicles. However, the social impacts of these applications are difficult to understand and assess. This means that the slow changing institutions in society that control systems such as the law, education, politics, and work often lag, while the faster moving commercial sector introduces changes in society that may or may not confer an overall benefit and often cannot be reversed. In four sessions (7th Nov, 5th Dec, 6th Feb, 6th Mar), this online, 2 hour, early evening discussion group aims to capture the insights and wisdom of U3AC members about the known, unknown, unanticipated, unobserved and little understood social impacts (good and bad) of current and near-future (5-10 years) AI technologies. No technical knowledge is required.
