The Cold War and its current implications (HIS 25)

  • Day and time: Friday 13:10 - 14:40
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Autumn (10 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 30
  • Start date: 14 October 2022
  • Description:

We have lived through the Cold War and seen it restarting after a brief pause, so a review of its history and how we have got to where we are today seems timely. As a generalist, rather than a historian, I will summarise the Cold War in terms of its leaders, geopolitics, economics, military trends and other relevant perspectives, employing a mix of lectures, videos and discussion. We will briefly review the period from 1945 to 1992, before examining in more detail particular events that appear relevant to understanding today’s situation, such as the Korean War, and the Suez and Cuban Missile crises. We will also review the Yeltsin years (92-99) and the Putin era (2000 onwards) including a discussion of the situation in Ukraine.
