The term aromatic compound originally referred to a hydrocarbon called benzene and its derivatives because of their distinctive and often pleasant odours. In time it became clear that a sounder classification for these compounds should be based on structure and reactivity rather than aroma. Starting with benzene this series of talks will cover a wide range of compounds derived from it. These will include some common analgesics, antiseptics, dyestuffs, explosives, perfumes and polymers. No previous scientific knowledge will be assumed and a set of notes will accompany the course.
