Since its earliest development from Greek drama and church music, opera has progressed through various pathways with differing emphases on the musical and dramatic components. Are some of these components merely trimmings and pretty add-ons to the core drama or do they contribute to the story telling? In this course we will consider the contributions of choruses, ensembles and arias to a selection of operas and examine their popularity within the opera and as stand-alone offerings.
