    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Spring (10 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 0
  • Start date: 19 January 2023
  • Description:

The poets we will be looking at are all published by Gaspereau Press in Nova Scotia, whose tag line, Literary Outfitters & Cultural Wilderness Guides since 1997, presents a refreshing backdrop to the poets we will be discussing. One of Canada's “most innovative and tenacious literary publishers,” Gaspereau Press produces award-winning books known for the originality of its authors, and the beauty and quality of its productions. Affordable trade paperbacks are Smyth-sewn for strength and flexibility and often sport handprinted jackets on handmade paper. Together we will read poems, often supplemented by essay extracts from the poets themselves, in seminar-style Zoom classes led by the tutor, who will be joining from Canada. The course is for complete novices and enthusiasts alike. Prepare to be astonished “and to pause in that astonishment for a long moment or two” to quote from Adam Zagajewski in Don McKay’s essay, “Why Poetry?” (2020). Preparatory reading will be encouraged.
