  • Description:

Reading is a great pleasure, which is much enhanced when you can share your thoughts with others. That’s what our reading group is about. We’ve been going for a number of years now (we used to be Book Group 5) and the format seems to work well. I choose the first book, but then the choice comes from the group, so that our range is always extending: it can be an old favourite, a bright new author, or whatever takes our fancy - some work, some don’t, but the discussion is always interesting. This year, I don’t have an outstanding book that I desperately want to read, so I’m going to suggest a book I’ve had on my shelf for some time, and not got round to: Peter Carey’s “Amnesia”. According to Andrew Motion writing in the Guardian, it is a “deeply engaging book… No other contemporary novelist is better able to mix farce with ferocity, or to better effect”. It was first published in 2014 and it’s now in paperback. Happy reading.
