German Poetry and Prose (GER 14)

  • Day and time: Tuesday 14:15 - 15:30
    Fortnightly
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (5 Weeks), Spring (5 Weeks), Summer (5 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 12
  • Start date: 13 October 2020
  • Description:

Our principal focus will continue to be a wide-ranging selection from the best of German writing in its shorter literary forms with particular focus on poetry - from medieval to modern - including song texts from classical Lieder and Weimar cabaret. In the past we have also read short plays ('Jedermann', extracts from 'Faust') and short stories from authors such as Böll, Kafka and Kleist, as well as texts revealing the personal reflections and socio-political commentary of writers such as Musil, Roth, Walser and Tucholsky. We will again draw from such resources - or indeed any others worthy of our attention. The choice is ours. Selection of texts is under the guidance of a coordinator but contributions may come from any member of the group. Discussion is in English. During the first term the format will mostly be self guided study. In the second and third terms the coordinator will resume guidance of the group.

Note: The Autumn and Spring terms will be held fortnightly via video-conference (Zoom).
