Classical Greek Self-Help Reading Group (GRC 02)

  • Day and time: Tuesday 11:15 - 12:15
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (5 Weeks), Spring (5 Weeks), Summer (10 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 8
  • Start date: 13 October 2020
  • Description:

This course continues from 2019-20 (GRC03), when Odyssey Books 1 and 2 were read and orally translated. Participants have studied Classical Greek for four or more years. We are likely to continue reading the Odyssey, with details agreed after the group has formed. Alternative texts, preferably featuring vocabulary and notes, may also be tackled, depending on members' views. A key text has been Homer: Odyssey I-XII, edited by W B Stanford (Bristol Classical Press). Dictionaries used include Liddell and Scott's Greek-English Lexicon and A Lexicon of the Homeric dialect by R.J. Cunliffe. Internet sources, such as the Perseus Digital Library, offer help with lexis (e.g. links to online dictionaries) and even parsing! Those wishing to extend existing knowledge or revive dormant skills might try Greek Beyond GCSE by John Taylor (Bristol Classical Press). For additional information please contact Mike Fay (phone or email). In the Spring term, the class will meet fortnightly in person and on the weeks in between will be via Zoom or similar.
