Troy to Bodrum (Summer term) (HIS 31)

  • Day and time: Friday 12:00 - 13:00
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Summer (7 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 30
  • Start date: 16 April 2021
  • Description:

Who does not know Troy? But beyond the Homeric drama there is more Troy to go round. The Romans were besotted with it and later even the conquering Turks were aware of its glorious past. Bodrum at the other end of the coast, offers an insight into one of the seven wonders of the world and how it managed to become famous when it was probably already ruinous. There are also sights to explore inland but not too far from the coast, like a city sacred to the goddess of love in the middle of nowhere or a place where people in their thousands died of thirst because the Byzantines had not got their logistics right. This and plenty more will keep us busy for seven weeks. The course is a repetition of last year's.

  • I have been busy with archaeology in Asia Minor for the past 30 years and there is still more out there.
