In the autumn term we will review sources for inspiration and ways of getting started; ways to develop character, situation, scene and event in fiction and non-fiction; and ways to improve style. In the spring term we will pay closer attention to different writing forms (e.g. drama, short story, poetry, creative non-fiction), depending on class interest. At the end of each term we will publish for our contributors a magazine of each class member's best writing that term.

This class is for all who enjoy writing poetry irrespective of form or genre. We meet fortnightly to share the work we have each produced in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Although we do not write to a given theme, the convener attempts to stimulate the group with handouts on a wide range of subjects of a vaguely poetic nature. NB this is a peer group and as such is not a teaching workshop.

WRT 05: STORIES OF OUR LIVES
Convener: Penny Henderson
Day and time: Thursday 1.15 - 3.15
Venue: Room 3, 27-28 Bridge Street
Terms: Autumn, spring.
Number of places: 10
As I age, some memories remain pin-sharp others emerge as I look at photos, reminisce with others, search for themes, or see how the threads of life have woven into patterns only clear in hindsight. I want to write some stories down.
This will be a space for a small group to bring short pieces of writing about their lives. By sharing and discussing what we write, we may each find encouragement to record and explore it, and extend our writing about our lives. I will take responsibility to provide some focus and structures, in hope that the group will provide others.
Note: Starts 20th October.

WRT 06: WRITERS' WORKSHOP

Day and time: Wednesday 10.30 - 12.30
Venue: Friends Meeting House, Jesus Lane
Terms: Autumn, spring, summer.
Number of places: 16
"Everyone has at least one good book inside them". The Writers' Workshop is a support group for would-be authors. We welcome newcomers seeking support in realising a long cherished project or already starting work on a book.
Some members of the existing group are writing memoirs for their grandchildren or for publication. Others are writing works of fiction or non-fiction. Each week we listen to and discuss work-in progress contributed by group members. We consider how to get started, the different forms narrative can take, voice, audience, plot and story-lines, characterisation, handling dialogue and so on. Advice on publishing opportunities will also be given. The convenor is a published author.
