Tutor: Trevor Lawrence
Day and time: Wednesday 10.15 - 11.30
Venue: The Centre at St Pauls, Hills Road
Terms: Autumn, spring.

Going back to the maths we have forgotten or never learnt at school. Some arithmetic and basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry. We will include fractions, percentages, types of angles and shapes, area, simple equations and basic graphs and charts. The aim is to be an informal and co-operative group in which the tutor will present most of the sessions, but there will be opportunities for members to give presentations if they wish. Complete beginners very welcome.

MTH 02: TAKING MATHS FURTHER
Tutor: John Sutcliffe
Day and time: Thursday 2.00 - 3.15
Venue: Friends Meeting House, Hartington Grove
Terms: Autumn, spring.
Number of places: 6
This class follows on from 'The Maths We Forgot' sequence. Its syllabus is that of A-Level Pure Mathematics from the 70's. Differential and Integral Calculus will be introduced from first principles. Series, partial fractions, coordinate geometry (conic sections), further trigonometry and Numerical Methods are all included. Class members may suggest additional topics, according to their own interests. The tutor will pace the class as members require, with the emphasis on understanding. Help will be given to those who may need to revise more of the assumed background. Presentations by individuals on particular topics are welcomed. A small number of textbooks is available (Heinemann Modular Mathematics, Pure Mathematics 1 & 2).

MTH 03: MATHS CAN BE FUN 1
Leader: Sarah Payne
Day and time: Thursday 12.30 - 1.45
Venue: Room 2, 27-28 Bridge Street
Terms: Autumn.
Number of places: 12
When telling people I am a maths teacher I have often encountered the somewhat nervous response "I was never any good at maths at school". I hope that those that take up this course will eventually agree with its title "Maths Can Be Fun". The course will cover a range of topics starting with the counting numbers and moving to Fibonacci sequences, prime numbers, Pascal's triangle, probability, problem solving - the composition of the group will steer the content and level. Links with art and music will be explored. No previous experience is required except a basic ability in arithmetic and an interest in numbers and problem solving.
