Leader: Sarah Payne
Day and time: Thursday 9.45 - 10.45
Venue: Room 1, 27-28 Bridge Street
Terms: Autumn.

When telling people I am a maths teacher I have often encountered the somewhat nervous response "I was never any good at maths at school". I hope that those that take up this course will eventually agree with its title "Maths Can Be Fun". The course will cover a range of topics starting with the counting numbers and moving to Fibonacci sequences, prime numbers, Pascal's triangle, probability, problem solving - the composition of the group will steer the content and level. Links with art and music will be explored. No previous experience is required except a basic ability in arithmetic and an interest in numbers and problem solving.

This course reminds us of the maths studied between 11 and 16 years. Members joining this class should be familiar with the work covered in the first year class ( The Maths we forgot -first year). This class will take the algebra, geometry and trigonometry further, with more on handling formulae in various aspects of algebra and trigonometry. Should members so wish there will be opportunities for them to give presentations as this is also a self-help class.

This class follows on from 'The Maths We Forgot' sequence. Its syllabus is that of A-Level Pure Mathematics from the 70's. Differential and Integral Calculus will be introduced from first principles. Class members may suggest additional topics, according to their own interests. The tutor will pace the class as members require, with the emphasis on understanding. Help will be given to those who may need to revise more of the assumed background. Presentations by individuals on particular topics are welcomed. A small number of textbooks is available (Heinemann Modular Mathematics, Pure Mathematics 1 & 2).
