We have some exploration of language issues, informal French conversation in pairs or small groups, short talks in French given by members of the class, newspaper articles and literary extracts to read, and occasionally chansons to listen to. Class members' ideas and contributions are always welcome, so that the class can evolve according to people's interests. The emphasis is on encouraging people to speak French freely.

This class is for anyone wishing to learn to speak, read, write and understand German. We shall use the BBC coursebook Deutsch Plus, which is supported by audio and video material. The course will proceed at the pace of the group, but students should be able to order in a restaurant, ask directions, shop and hold a simple conversation after 3 terms work. Some simple homework assignments will be given, and will add to the enjoyment and satisfaction of this course.

This is a relaxed class for anyone with roughly 'A' level standard German, who wants to improve or brush up their grammar.
The sessions will consist of about 20 min everyday conversation, 20 min grammar and 20 min assorted translation, and the emphasis throughout will be on the grammar.
You will need a copy of Alles Klar (ISBN 978-0-17-444548-2). We will also use the Dreyer-Schmitt grammar book, but there is no need to buy a copy unless you want to.

The class is conducted in Italian. We read and discuss current newspaper articles and things of mutual interest. We also aim to read a modern Italian novel each term; or one in the autumn term and one stretched out over the spring and summer terms. In the autumn term we will read L'Agnese va a morire by Renata Viganò, Einaudi 2005.
"L'Agnese va a morire" di Renata Viganò è la storia della lotta partigiana vista attraverso gli occhi di una donna, Agnese appunto. Non esistono altri romanzi simili sulla lotta partigiana, altri romanzi resistenziali visti e vissuti al femminile. Agnese è una donna semplice, che decide si buttarsi nella mischia dopo la morte di suo marito Palita. Tutto il romanzo è avvolgente e toccante, con momenti di alta commozione e poesia, specialmente lì dove ci fa toccare con mano la gratuità della violenza perpetrata dai 'nazi' e dai fascisti sugli inermi e sui deboli.

ITA 09: Italian Literature: Readings from Modern Novelists

This continuing course provides an opportunity for those with some working knowledge of the language to read, translate and discuss prose works by modern Italian authors. We shall begin with Andrea Camilleri La Forma dell'acqua (Sellerio, Palermo) his first and perhaps most ground-breaking Sicilian 'giallo'. A well-established scenario writer and television producer, Camilleri delights with his incisive wit and irony. After Camilleri we shall go on to contemporary writing from elsewhere in Italy, the title yet to be disclosed.

In past years we have covered a wide range of novels and stories, from different centuries, including contemporary fiction. We have recently started on Bulgakov.

The foundation material of the course will be selected passages taken from the works of outstanding modern Spanish and Latin American writers in Castilian.
Structured around an individual text each session exciting activities will embrace comprehension, translation, vocabulary development, and writing proficiency. Some important grammatical topics that pose difficulty will be reviewed.
