Philosophy, psychology, anthropology, literary criticism and linguistics all contribute to this area of enquiry.  How do we construct a context, involving a particular set of background knowledge, to work out what a speaker means?  How does speaker-centred language assist in this?  How can the speaker 'stage' a sentence in terms of choosing a helpful beginning and organising it so that we move from shared information to new information?  What determines how we construct narratives?  How much do we rely on a shared understanding of the metaphorical structures which permeate our language?  (Enthusiasts might try G Brown Speakers, listeners and communication.  CUP chapters 1, 2 & 7 - more technical than the course will be!)

Note: 9 weeks only.  Starts 6th October
