Environment Courses in Detail

ENV 01:Addressing Overconsumption

Tutor: John Ranken
Day and time: Monday 10.00 - 11.15
Venue: Room 5, 27-28 Bridge Street
Terms: Autumn, spring.
Number of places: 16
This course will explore links between consumption and environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity, degradation and loss of natural resources, drawing on the work of environmental writers such as James Lovelock, Fritz Schumacher, David MacKay, Jonathon Porritt and recent research in consumption studies. The emphasis will be on culture and the interlocking economic and social structures which drive consumerist societies. Through analysis of some of the systems relating to provision of food, shelter, work, education, business and technology, we will aim to identify what scope there may be for change by individuals and in wider society.

'Carbon Conversations' is a format developed by Cambridge Carbon Footprint, of 5 meetings held fortnightly with a follow-up session at an agreed date.
Through group discussion and board games that link facts and feelings, members can move towards planning action to reduce their CO2 emissions over a 4-5 year period. You can learn some basic facts about Climate Change, and clarify the relationship of individual lifestyles to global CO2 emissions. Better still, we can talk about issues, ideas and reactions in an accepting supportive milieu and share ideas and practical tips.
A bag of books on climate change will be available on loan. For further information see www.cambridgecarbonfootprint.org
Participants will be required to buy a copy of the Carbon Conversations handbook, available at the first meeting. Price £15.
Note: Starts 14th October.
