Venue: Room 4, 27-28 Bridge Street

Forget your preconceptions about college economics, with its complexity and mathematics.  This course has no mathematics and is all about what you already know.  Its aim is to explain how economies actually work.  You will discover why political utterances can often be so unsatisfactory.  You will acquire a structured way of evaluating national and international economic issues.  We will discuss what is driving the globalisation and economic disparity phenomenon, as well as the causes that lie behind slumps and booms.  We will review a bit of history to show how we got to where we are, and also touch on ethics.

There is a book called How to lie with statistics and we have all heard of Lies, damned lies, and statistics - but maybe we will avoid being "lied" to if we understand the tools statistics uses!  Only basic arithmetic is required - so that "advanced" students will find this course is too fundamental - but, nonetheless, a firm foundation for further studies.
