This course will look at the geography, architecture, art, history and culture of Rome, Venice, Florence, Siena, Pisa and Lucca.  Following the course a trip will be arranged to one of the areas studied.

WOR 03: MEDICAL AND MISSION WORK IN SOUTH INDIA - A CONTINUING EXPERIENCE (SUMMER TERM)

A series of 6 illustrated talks with the opportunity for discussion about Joy and her husband’s experiences in India over the past six years.  Topics will centre around the work of the Christian Medical College and hospital in Vellore together with its Community Health and Development Hospital and the Low Cost Care Unit in the slums.  In addition the extensive work in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with leprosy at Karigiri Hospital will be included.  There will be time to discuss other project work with Sri Lankan refugees, rag-pickers and gypsies and the experience of living in the South Indian culture.  This is not an academic course but for people with an interest in the subject.
Note: 6 weeks starts 17th April.

WOR 04: THE POTTED ETRUSCAN

‘Gloomy’ for Nietzsche, ‘delightful’ for DH Lawrence and mysterious for everybody else, the Etruscans loom disturbingly large in the experience of those strolling blissfully under the Tuscan sun.  The aim of the course is to take stock of current knowledge and put it into the wider context of the Mediterranean.  If you enjoyed Crete!, this is the course for you.

WOR 05: TRAVELS TO REMOTE PLACES

Day and time: Alternate Mondays 2.15 - 4.00       
Venue: Room 1, 27-28 Bridge Street
Terms: Autumn.

This course of five sessions will, through photographs and discussion, explore the opportunities and issues for travellers raised by journeys to remote places.
Our first session will consider an expedition to Mongolia, visiting Ulaanbaatar, Jalman Meadows, the Onon River, the Gobi Desert and the Hustai National Park.  The next relates to a sea-based journey from Tierra del Fuego to the East and West Falklands, South Georgia, the South Orkney Islands and the Antarctic Peninsular.  Our third session looks at a land-based expedition to Brazil, which visited the Serra da Canastra National Park, the lowland rain forest of Santa Teresa, the Caraca National Park and the Pantanal.  The fourth session follows a sea journey in the High Arctic through the North West Passage from Provideniya in the far east of Russia via Baffin Island to Resolute in the Canadian Arctic.  Our final session will cover an expedition to the World’s fourth largest island, Madagasca, travelling from Andasibe in the east to Ifaty in the west.
