Courses and Other Activities

All courses and other activities are available to members. If you wish to take part in any activity you need to join. There are a few activities such as lectures and trips when members may bring a guest but only if there are spaces after all members have been accommodated.

About U3AC
The University of the Third Age in Cambridge is an independent self-financing organisation that was founded in 1982. Its aim is to provide educational and social activities to those no longer in full-time employment and as such there are no age restrictions.

Most of the tutors are themselves members. Other members arrange visits to museums, galleries, theatres and concerts and occasionally organise short trips in this country and longer tours abroad.

A revised constitution in the spring of 2007 enabled us to offer an even wider range of courses and activities, hence the formal change of name to The University of the Third Age in Cambridge (2007).

The U3AC is very much run by the members themselves so there is a continuing need for help with various activities. In particular there is a need for more members to teach a class or lead a group. If you would be willing to help in this or any other way please fill in the 'Helping' section of the application form or get in touch with The Office.

After payment of the enrolment fee of £5 and annual subscription of £63 there is no additional charge for the majority of courses and you are eligible to apply for up to 6. (Occasionally there is an additional charge to pay for an outside tutor or special equipment, this is clearly stated.)

The Office
We currently have premises in Bridge Street, which includes 5 lecture rooms.

There are 2 steps at street level to gain access to the building, a handrail is fitted here, at the front door entrance and further handrails are fitted to the walls on the staircase up to the first floor, a lift is also available. A bell at low level near the front entrance can be used to alert staff to members who require assistance or help with the removable ramp to access the building. An intercom system is also installed for members who wish to speak to staff before proceeding to the First floor.

Staff at the office are always happy to deal with queries or problems, whether by telephone or in person, but would appreciate it if members could note the opening hours of 10 am to 2 pm, Monday to Friday.

We can usually answer most questions about U3AC and we also hold information about other aspects of retirement, or may be able to advise you of useful contacts.
