* Wednesday Lecture
Next week’s Wednesday lecture on 29th February is entitled Philip Larkin: Funny Man. It will be given by John White, Emeritus Reader in American History at the University of Hull and Jazz Consultant to the Philip Larkin Society. The lecture will be held in Room 3 of the University Lecture Rooms at 8 Mill Lane, starting at 2.15pm.
Norah Boyce Lecture
This next lecture will be on 6th March and is entitled All power is theft it will be given by Dr Richard McMahon. Lectures are held in the Sackler Lecture Theatre of the Institute of Astronomy on Tuesdays and start at 5.45pm.

Norah Boyce lectures
Christine Thirkettle will be taking over the organisation of the Norah Boyce Science Lectures from October 2012. She has already started inviting lecturers for the next academic year but would welcome input from other U3AC members with suggestions of topics or interesting speakers. Please contact Christine via the office.
New group on women’s studies from October
One or two additional co-ordinators are needed for a new group, meeting fortnightly, which will look at the place of women, how it has changed and their achievements in many different settings. Specific topics will depend on the interests of members and what they can offer. Each member will take it in turns to research and introduce a subject or organise a visit. Anyone interested in helping as a co-ordinator please contact Judy Wilson via the office.

The following meetings with invited speakers being held at 11.30am – 1.00pm in Room 1, 27-28 Bridge Street will be open to U3AC members. Pre-booking is essential as spaces are limited.

Summer holiday courses
We are preparing a programme of courses which will be held in the U3AC premises between July and September. If you would be willing to offer a one-off lecture or run a short course please contact the office.
Saturday morning volunteers needed
We have had a number of members volunteer to open the front door for class attendees on Saturdays between 10 - 11.30 am, but could do with a few more. If you are interested please contact Gemma in the Office.
Cycling Club
The first of six programmes of rides for 2012 is now available. It covers the period 23 February to 15 April and there are 16 rides of varying distances and speed for you to choose from. Contact cyclingu3ac@gmail.com for the detailed list.
Collection for The Sick Children’s Trust
The Sick Children’s Trust has been nominated as a charity for the Cambridge News – £10,000 Cash in the Community scheme. The amount the Trust will receive depends on the total number of tokens printed in the Cambridge News that can be collected. Please help by bringing in to the U3AC any tokens that you can over the next four weeks.

Tea Party: “History of the Cambridge Nursing Homes”
Sheila Mann, retired nursing sister, will give a talk about the Cambridge Nursing Homes – the Evelyn, the Hope and others on Tuesday 28 February. Doors open 13.30 followed by talk at 14.00 Freemasons’ Hall, Bateman Street. Tickets £12.00 (includes afternoon tea).
Tea Party: “Tales of the Unexpected”
Christopher South, local journalist and Radio Cambridgeshire presenter, together with his wife Janet, will relate some of their amusing holiday anecdotes on Tuesday 13 March. Doors open 13.30hr followed by talk at 14.00hr. Freemasons’ Hall, Bateman Street. Tickets £12.00 (includes afternoon tea).
Volunteers needed for a reading programme

Demonstration of Hearing Help Equipment
Come to our drop in session on 24 March between the hours of 10am and 12.30pm at Scotsdales Garden Centre, 120 Cambridge Road, Great Shelford, Cambridge.
Cambridge National Trust Association
The Association meets on the third Sunday of the month, in the Community Hall of St John’s Church in Hills Road at 3pm. These meetings take the form of talks on many subjects, including the conservation of buildings and landscape, both within and outside the National Trust. In the summer there is usually a series of external visits, including one or two outside the Eastern Region.
The next Sunday meeting will be on 18th March at 3pm. The speaker will be Brian Jackson whose subject will be “Looking at Clocks”. If you are interested, do feel free to come to meet us on this occasion.
Gender Symposium: Appearances of Gender
An all-day Symposium on The Appearance of Gender will be held from 10.00-16.15 on Friday 9th March in the Palmerston Room, Fisher Building, St John’s College. There will be numerous talks throughout the day given by different Professors.
No charge and no need to register.
* The Cambridge Science Festival
The Cambridge Science Festival is just around the corner! This year there are over 180 mostly free events running throughout Cambridge from 12 - 25 March. The 2012 Festival celebrates the boundaries that are being broken in science at events from racing mini rockets, using lasers, to learning about how the BBC’s hit series Frozen Planet was produced. There will be the usual mix of interactive fun for all the family at the open days on 17 and 24 March, along with plenty for adults at the evening lecture series.
